Nara into Rio quarters

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Fifth seed Kurumi Nara was a second-round winner Thursday at the inaugural Rio Open tennis event.

The Japanese player got past German Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-0, 7-6 (7-3) on the red clay at Jockey Club Brasileiro.

Also on Day 4, Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino overcame South African Chanelle Scheepers 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1, Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu got past Paraguayan fellow qualifier Veronica Cepede Royg 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, and Brazil's own Teliana Pereira topped Austrian Patricia Mayr-Achleitner 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Friday's quarterfinals in Rio will pit top-seeded Czech Klara Zakopalova against Poland's Katarzyna Piter, third-seeded Argentine Paula Ormaechea versus Italian qualifier Nastassja Burnett, Nara against Dominguez Lino, and Pereira versus Begu.
