Bob Schmitz: Groups denied support, not rights

February 23, 2014

In their Feb. 17 Point of View “Protecting students’ 1st Amendment rights,” Jenna Robinson and Tami Fitzgerald indicate that in certain cases Christian religious groups are being denied their First Amendment rights on UNC campuses when these groups are denied university support because of their policies regarding admission.

The authors apparently think that freedom of speech means freedom to be supported by the state. Nowhere are these groups being denied their right to say what they want, only their right to have North Carolina’s public universities support them.

Either the authors do not know this difference and should get some further “higher education” themselves or they do know and are trying to deceive. Their article would get a poor grade at any UNC government class.
