Girls track and field preview: Wakefield looks strong again

February 23, 2014

Wakefield had its string of outdoor championships snapped at three in 2013 when Southeast Raleigh claimed the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A title with an 89-82 victory.

The Wolverines bounced back to win the NCHSAA indoor championship in February and look like the state outdoor favorite again.

Coach Ann Graham has depth and athletes who should contend for individual championships.

The Wolverines’ Ama-Selina Tchume won the indoor 300- and 1,000-meter titles and was second behind Cary’s Charminique Hackney in the 55 and second in the long jump to Apex’s Sydnei Murphy. Tia Robinson was second in the 500 to Cary’s Layla White.

Wakefield’s 4x400 relay won and its 4x400 and 4x800 were among the top five.

Carrboro won last season’s 1A/2A girls outdoor championship.
