NC Press Photographers Association awards N&O 'Staff of the Year'

The News & Observer photography staff has been awarded Staff of the Year honors by the N.C. Press Photographers Association, which met in Charlotte over the weekend.

In the association’s pictures of the year competition, N&O photojournalist Travis Long won eight individual awards, including Best of Show and runner-up in the Photographer of the Year competition.

Jill Knight was named student photographer of the year, and Ethan Hyman was awarded first place in the feature photo category.

Long’s awards include: Best in Show; first place in Sports Story; first place in News Photo Story; first in Spot News; first in Multimedia Long Term; second place in Multimedia Short Term; second in Multimedia Long Term; and Photographer of the Year Runner-Up.

Knight was named Student Photographer of the Year and placed third in the Feature Picture Story category.

Hyman won First Place in Feature Photos; Honorable Mention for Portrait; and Honorable Mention for Cell Phone Photo.

Chris Seward received an Honorable Mention in the Sports Feature category.

Also, Al Drago, an N&O summer intern from Elon University, placed second in the Feature Photo category and received an Honorable Mention for Photo Story.
