RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK — Some commuters will have to find a detour over the next 10 days while Hopson Road is closed between Davis Drive and Miami Boulevard.
The closing starts at 9 a.m. Wednesday and is expected to last until Saturday, March 8, the state Department of Transportation said.
Hopson serves as an east-west commuter road through the southern half of RTP. Traffic will be diverted onto N.C. 54 as an alternate route between Davis and Miami.
The road closing is part of a $10.9 million DOT construction project that includes a new bridge to lift railroad tracks over Hopson Road, eliminating a rail crossing where three people died in a 1992 car-train crash.
The DOT project also will make other street changes nearby, straighten a curve in the tracks to allow for faster passenger train speeds, and add a 3.8-mile track to be used as a passing siding. The work is to be completed in December 2015.
