Single-vehicle wreck kills Benson man

From staff reportsMarch 2, 2014

— A one-vehicle accident early Saturday morning on Old Fairground Road killed the driver, a 24-year-old Benson man, the state Highway Patrol said.

Lucas Daniel Currin died behind the wheel of a 2001 Ford Explorer after it left the road and struck a pine tree near the intersection of Massengale Pond Road, about six miles northwest of Benson, said Trooper G.H. Fryar. His girlfriend, Jessica Leigh Coats, 22, also of Benson, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to WakeMed.

Fryar said Currin and Coats were headed to his home at about 3 a.m. after eating at a restaurant along the intersection of N.C. 42 and I-40 when the SUV drifted to the left and off the road. The crash pinned Currin in the vehicle.

Both were wearing their seat belts, Fryar said, and speed was not a factor in the crash. He said the patrol is awaiting the results of a toxicology report to determine if alcohol was involved.
