Wake County schools closing three hours early Monday

The Wake County school system is closing three hours early Monday, March 3, because of the expected inclement weather. But brace for the consequences.

When Wake County school leaders said that they could replace last month’s snow days without any makeup days, it came with the warning that more lost time would have an impact. Cathy Moore, deputy superintendent for school performance, said Wake had a little more than the equivalent of 2.5 days worth of extra school hours that it could tap into. They were using that time and converting the March 7 early release day into a full day to make up those three snow days.

That was a one-shot deal so Wake faces figuring out how to make up for the lost time today to stay above the state’s 1,025-hour minimum. If the opening is delayed Tuesday to let road conditions improve, you could see the time lost from today and tomorrow made up by adding a full makeup day to the schedule.
