The best rock picks, March 7

The Fleshtones will proudly fly the garage-rock flag at their Local 506 show in Chapel Hill Monday.

  • Other highlights

    • Friday brings alternative-rock supergroup Ex Hex to Durham’s Pinhook (with Mount Moriah’s Heather McEntire opening), and honky-tonk keeper of the flame Wayne “The Train” Hancock to Raleigh’s Pour House (with Kenny Roby opening). Also Friday, screamo band Alesana launches “The Decade Tour” with a hometown show at Raleigh’s Southland Ballroom.

    • Raleigh’s Lincoln Theatre has a great Cajun-centric bill Saturday with guitar deity Tab Benoit, Subdudes frontman Tommy Malone and Mel Melton’s Wicked Mojos. Sunday brings The Pains of Being Pure at Heart to Cat’s Cradle and bluesman Guy Davis to Carrboro ArtsCenter.

    • Boneslinger opens for punk-polka crew Brave Combo Thursday at the Pour House, the same night the marvelously odd alt-surf band Zack Mexico journeys inland from the Outer Banks to play Pinhook with Lilac Shadows and Clockwork Kids.

If armageddon ever comes, the Fleshtones will probably survive it. That would hardly be less likely than what they’ve survived already after nearly 40 years in show business since they formed in 1976 in New York. Long after most of their CBGBs peers gave up the ghost, the Fleshtones are still proudly flying the garage-rock flag on their swell new album “Wheel of Talent” (Yep Roc Records). A couple of songs have actual symphonic adornments (!) but mostly it’s just good, exuberant fun along the lines of “Hipster Heaven.” Long may they wail. The Fleshtones play Monday at Chapel Hill’s Local 506. Showtime is 9 p.m. and cover is $10. See for details.
