Greg Bruhn: A not-so-sweet salary

March 12, 2014

I noted with interest in the March 12 Under the Dome item “Teacher salaries remain 46th in nation” that starting teacher pay in North Carolina is now ranked 48th nationally, at $30,778 annually.

I proceeded to discover, on the following page, the announcement of the Japanese candy maker, Morinaga & Co.’s effort to begin construction on a “High Chew” candy factory, near Mebane, within two to three weeks. The average annual salary at the High Chew facility would be $37,979 and include health insurance.

It’s a sad commentary on North Carolina’s priorities when the average salary at a candy factory exceeds that of a starting teacher by $7,201.
