The N.C. Symphony’s classical concerts this weekend explore music by African-American composers, featuring Rhiannon Giddens of Grammy Award-winning string band The Carolina Chocolate Drops. Giddens sings three songs by Will Marion Cook from the Black Broadway era and joins the band for three minstrel songs, adapted by Giddens. Music director Grant Llewellyn conducts Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s “Symphonic Variations on an African Air” and William Grant Still’s “Afro-American Symphony.” Meymandi Concert Hall, Raleigh. 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday. $18-$65. 919-733-2750 or
