Jeff Hamilton: Take cleanup from profits

March 15, 2014

Regarding the March 8 business story “Duke: Ash tab belongs in bills”: The Duke Energy CEO does have a point. The siting and creation of modern lined ash landfills as well as the fuel cost of transportation are part of the corporate cost structure and customer rates. However, the careless and cheap disposal of ash is part of the profit structure.

All costs of removal and environmental cleanup are squarely on the shareholders, bondholders, investors, officers and board of Duke Energy. The customers do not owe one dime of it.
