Wake County could announce new makeup days today

We’ll likely find out at this afternoon’s Wake County school board meeting how district leaders want to make up today’s snow day.

Wake had waited as long as it could until after 7 a.m. to make the call to close schools for today, March 18, instead of just having a three-hour delay. Districts around the Triangle have been waiting longer to decide on cancellations after going through so many snow days already.

In the case of the traditional-calendar schools, Wake may extend the end of the school year by one more day to June 13. That’s the last day the district can go to under the state’s calendar law.

That option would allow Wake to avoid taking more time out of spring break for traditional-calendar schools.

Year-round students are looking at another Saturday of classes. Wake hasn’t officially announced how those schools will cope with the cancellation of the March 8 makeup day.

The options are messy for the modified-calendar schools and early colleges.

For instance, the modified-calendar schools are in the second week of their spring break. Much of the first week was used as snow days. Their school year might be extended to make up for today.

At some point, Wake may have to consider options such as tacking time on to the school day.
