Raleigh man accused of stealing, wrecking triple-deck pizza oven

From staff reportsMarch 18, 2014

— A man has been charged with stealing a pizza oven.

Police suspect James Earl Campbell Jr., 24, took the “Bakers Pride Three Stack Pizza Oven” from Brookside Deli on Saturday. A triple-capacity Bakers Pride pizza oven can measure up to six feet tall about five feet wide, according to commercial listings. The restaurant has since replaced the oven and continues to serve pizza.

The stolen oven had been sitting outside the building, located near Historic Oakwood Cemetery, on March 14 because the restaurant was making alterations to its kitchen, according to police spokesman Jim Sughrue. An investigation yielded probable cause that Campbell stole the oven late that night, Sughrue wrote in an email.

Campbell was arrested on Tuesday about a half mile from the restaurant, near his listed address at 1410 Brookside Drive, Apartment 202, according to an arrest warrant and an arrest report.

The $8,000 oven turned up at a scrap yard on Garner Road, but was so severely damaged during the theft and transport that the owner can no longer use it, Sughrue wrote.

Campbell was jailed Tuesday at the Wake County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bail.
