Oregon Inlet

Bluefin have been popping up in the Gulfstream, but the cold, windy weather has slowed area fishing. Contact: Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 252-441-6301,

Cape Lookout/Bogue Inlet

The cold weather has put a damper on area fishing, but some puppy drum still are being caught in the creeks with Gulp! and mirrolure bait. Contact: EJW Outdoors 252-247-4725; Portside Marina 252-726-7678;

Topsail Island

Inshore, black drum and blow fish are being caught with shrimp, and trout and red drum are being caught with artificial baits. Offshore, black bass are being caught with squid. Contact: East Coast Discount Tackle 910-328-1887,

Wilmington/ Wrightsville Beach

Cold temperatures and heavy wind have limited fishing, but wahoo, cobia and sea bass still can be caught offshore. Ballyhoo and squid have been popular bait choices. Contact: Tex’s Tackle 910-791-1763,

Southport/Sunset Beach

Though it has been a bit slow, puppy drum and whiting can be found in the creeks and are being caught with Vudu shrimp. Dutchman Creek Bait & Tackle 910-457-1221;; or


Falls Lake

Fishing has picked up as crappie are being caught with minnows from the shoreline to about 5 feet out, and bass is being hooked with crank bait, jigs and spinners from 2-10 feet off. Water level: normal 251.5, Wednesday 252.42, full pool 264.8. Contact: Outhouse Tackle 919-217-0085;

Jordan Lake

Rain has caused high water, which has resulted in a slow down in fishing. The hope is by the weekend some water will recede, leading to improved fishing. Water level: normal 216, Wednesday 220.66, full pool 240. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101; Crosswinds Marina 919-362-5391.

Kerr Lake

Wintry weather has frozen local fishing. When warm, area fishermen can expect to hook some crappie and bass near the lake. Water level: normal 300, Wednesday 301.93, full pool 320. Contact: Bobcat’s Bait & Tackle 434-374-8381;

Lake Wheeler

Shearon Harris Lake

Crappie are biting at scattered depths and are being caught with minnows and dark or bright bait. Largemouth bass can be found in shallow waters on sunny days. Contact: The Tackle Box 919-557-8255;
