Raleigh police say girl was with younger sibling when she drowned

From staff reportsMarch 21, 2014

— A toddler who drowned at a Raleigh apartment Thursday had been left alone with a younger sibling in a bathtub, according to recording of a 911 call made public Friday.

Skye McLeod, 3, and the unnamed sibling were being watched by a caretaker, who said he left the room and returned to find the girl unconscious, according to the call.

Police have not released the name of the caretaker, but in a recording of the 911 call he made to police, the man says the girl was not breathing and had no pulse.

“They were in the tub,” he said, clearly distraught. “And I went to check on ‘em, and she was laying under the water.”

The 911 dispatcher instructed the caretaker on how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Initial reports about the drowning indicated that the girl was 4, but police corrected her age Friday.

The fatal incident occurred on the 6100 block of St. Giles Street in northwestern Raleigh just after 4 p.m. Thursday, according to Raleigh police. Skye was pronounced dead on arrival at Rex Hospital, police said.

A police investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed.
