Wolfpack wrestler Gwiazdowski becomes national champion

— Redshirt sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski became the N.C. State wrestling program’s sixth national champion Saturday, as he captured a 4-2 win over top seed Tony Nelson of Minnesota in the final at 285 pounds at the NCAA championships.

Gwiazdowski (42-2) also becomes the third Wolfpack heavyweight champion, joining Tab Thacker in 1984 and Sylvester Terkay in 1993.

Men’s lacrosse

No. 6 UNC 11, No. 1 Maryland 8: North Carolina’s efficient offense, combined with an outstanding defensive effort, led the sixth-ranked Tar Heels to victory at Kenan Stadium.

It’s the second straight year UNC (7-2, 1-2 ACC) has defeated the Terps (7-1, 2-1) when they were the No. 1 team in the nation.

Women’s lacrosse

No. 8 Duke 16, No. 14 Virginia 11: A late six-goal scoring run propelled the Blue Devils at home in a contest that featured eight ties, six lead changes and 19 second-half goals.

No. 1 UNC 14, No. 5 Boston College 13: Aly Messinger scored a career-high five goals, including the game-winner with 28 seconds to play.
