Kenille Baumgardner: Taking out trash

March 23, 2014

After a steady diet of political food fights, Duke Energy’s dirty water, N.C. pork waste and legislative open-door policy to industrial pollution, it was wonderfully refreshing to read the March 17 Thumbs Up article “Trash terminators tame school’s lunchroom waste,” which was about students solving in their school what is a national problem of cafeteria food waste.

It gives me great hope that the students at Phillips Middle School not only saw but seemed to understand and are doing something about the mess our generation is leaving them. Imagine if all schools, restaurants and residences would divert food waste by recycling and composting. Imagine if all industries would do the same with their waste. I cannot say enough good things about these young people, “The Trash Terminators.”
