Raleigh woman is charged with child abuse after son is burned

March 23, 2014

— Police arrested a Raleigh woman Saturday for child abuse; they allege she burned and bruised her two-year-old son.

Raleigh police charged La’chelle Keyet Council, 26, with felony intentional child abuse with serious physical injury as well as a count of misdemeanor child abuse. Arrest warrants indicate that the two-year-old had “second-degree burns to the upper thigh and buttocks areas” relating to the more serious charge. The misdemeanor stems from bruising to the backc of the legs inflicted by other than accidental means.

Council was being held at Wake County Detention Center on $75,000 bond. If she posts bail she will be prohibited from contact with the victim, according to a Conditions of Release Order.

Council, who lives on Maitland Dr., was convicted of misdemeanor possession of stolen goods in 2009 after initially also being charged with felony obtaining property under false pretenses in the case. From staff reports
