Police continued to investigate Monday the death of a UNC Charlotte student who fell over the weekend from an on-campus residence hall.

The university identified the student Monday as 18-year-old Joshua Robert Helm, a freshman from Hillsborough. He was a graduate of Northern High School in Durham.

In a statement Monday, university spokesman John Bland said the student fell from the seventh floor of Moore Hall. The 12-story residence hall does not have balconies, although windows in rooms can be opened from the inside.

Bland said the university’s police department requested that the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department take the lead on the investigation. Capt. Todd Lontz said Sunday detectives were investigating the death and hadn’t determined whether it was an accident, suicide or some other cause. Bland said authorities don’t suspect foul play in the incident.

The university said counseling services are being provided to students on campus in the wake of the death.

“The death of a student is a blow to the entire UNC Charlotte community,” Bland said in a statement.

Richard Taylor, a freshman at UNCC, said he lived on the seventh floor with Helm. He described Helm as a “very funny, nice guy.”

“If anything bothered him, you couldn’t tell,” said Taylor, 19. “He was always telling jokes.”
