Christopher Domres: Private snarls, too

March 26, 2014

When I hear conservatives say that government can’t do anything right and that everything should be privatized, I wonder, where do they live that all of their bills for utilities and credit cards are correct all the time? As a small-business owner who deals with large corporations, I find I have to call most of them two or three times to get a purchase order or bill corrected.

I signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act website with no problems at all. Then, the private corporation, Blue Cross Blue Shield, failed to administer the policy. I called three times over a two-month period to obtain our cards and benefits brochure. Each time I was told it would be mailed right out that day and to wait a week to 10 days for the postal service to deliver it from Durham.

Recently we finally received the package, and it contained three copies. The dates on each copy were those dates I called. But the postmarks on all three were three days before! If the workers are swamped, BCBS should hire more workers to process the new policy applications.
