DURHAM — Police do not know why a Durham man drove his Toyota south in the northbound lanes of the Durham Freeway and hit an oncoming vehicle, killing himself and injuring three other men.
John Michael Williams, 59, was driving around 9 p.m. Tuesday in the wrong direction on N.C. 147, also known as the Durham Freeway, when he collided head-on with a northbound Jeep driven by Jimmy Allen, 25, of Hillsborough.
Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.
Allen and his brother, 30-year-old Walter Allen, suffered serious injuries and remain hospitalized. A back seat passenger in Allen's Jeep – Michael Carter, 28, of Durham – was treated at the hospital for his injuries and then released.
No charges have been filed, Michael said.
