Saltwater

Oregon Inlet

Bluefin, yellow fin and big eye are being caught offshore. Inshore fishing has been slow. Contact: Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 252-441-6301, www.oregon-inlet.com.

Buxton/Hatteras

Tuna can be found 20 miles outside of the Hatteras Inlet and are being caught with ballyhoos and butterfly jigs. Red drum is biting near the beach. Contact: Red Drum Tackle 252-995-5414, www.hatteras-island.com; offshore news, Oden’s Dock 252-986-2555, www.odensdock.com; or www.hatterasharbor.com.

Ocracoke/Portsmouth

On warm days puppy drum can be hooked near the beach with cut bait or artificial bait. Contact: Tradewinds Bait & Tackle 252-928-5491, www.fishtradewinds.com; Morris Marina 252-225-4261, www.portsmouthislandfishing.com.

Cape Lookout/Bogue Inlet

Topsail Island

High volumes of red drum can be found on the shoals and inside the mouths of the creeks and can be caught with savage shrimp. Contact: East Coast Discount Tackle 910-328-1887, www.eastcoastsports.com.

Wilmington/ Wrightsville Beach

Black sea bass can be located about 40-60 miles off shore and are being caught with squid. African Pompano can be found 55-60 miles off shore in the gulfstream and are being caught with butterfly jigs. Contact: Tex’s Tackle 910-791-1763, www.texstackle.com.

Southport/Sunset Beach

Puffer fish are beginning to appear near the piers and can be hooked with shrimp bait, while red drum is available inshore. Contact: Dutchman Creek Bait & Tackle 910-457-1221; www.yeahrightcharters.com; or www.oifishingcenter.com.

Freshwater

Falls Lake

Bass fishing has picked up of late and can be caught at depths of up to five feet with spinner bait, while crappie are biting biting minnows five feet-down. Water level: normal 251.5, Wednesday 252.03, full pool 264.8. Contact: Outhouse Tackle 919-217-0085; www.wmi.org.

Jordan Lake

High waters continue to slow down fishing, but crappie can be hooked at depths of 18-20 feet with minnows. Water level: normal 216, Wednesday 216.10, full pool 240. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101; Crosswinds Marina 919-362-5391.

Kerr Lake

Crappie are being hooked at depths of 15 feet with different jig heads as bait, while catfish can be located further down and caught with cut schad. Water level: normal 300, Wednesday 301.64, full pool 320. Contact: Bobcat’s Bait & Tackle 434-374-8381; www.kerrlake.com.

Lake Wheeler

High waters continue to slow down fishing, but crappie can be hooked at depths of 18-20 feet with minnows Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101.

Shearon Harris Lake

Around Jordan and Harris Lake crappie are biting at depths of 15 feet and can be caught with minnows. Bass are slowing starting to move up. Contact: The Tackle Box 919-557-8255; www.wmi.org.
