Durham police search for murder suspect in March 22 shooting

From staff reportsMarch 27, 2014

— Police are searching for a man charged with murder following a fatal shooting at an apartment on Liberty Street on Saturday.

Durham police investigators suspect that Jermaine Alexander Gibbs, 18, fatally shot a 21-year-old man inside 561 Liberty Street, Apt. 9, just after 10:03 p.m Saturday, the Durham Police Department announced Thursday.

Police have not arrested Gibbs, a resident of Eva Street. Investigators think Gibbs knew his victim, Jeffery Lamar Dawes, 21, of Durham, and that the shooting does not appear to be random.

Police ask anyone with information on Gibbs’ whereabouts to call Investigator S. Pate at 919-560-4440, ext. 29332, or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves, according to police.

Police released a photo of Gibbs, noting that he put his hair into small braids sometime after the image was made.
