Josephine R. Lowe: Taxing times for seniors

March 30, 2014

The Republican Party has harmed all the senior citizens who have to file as empty-nester widows with zero dependents. I recently had my taxes done only to find out that I owe more money than at any other time. I don’t mind paying my fair share, but when I have to get both my pension and Social Security checks taxed and still have to pay, I get very upset.

I think that I did everything right: got an education, got a job, married, helped to support the family and invested in the stock market. Now that my husband has died and my daughter no longer lives with me, I am being punished.

What am I supposed to do? Have a child or remarry? I don’t think that at my age that would be advisable or possible. Every one of my friends who are senior citizens are complaining that they too are getting hit real hard.

Just remember we won’t forget, we won’t forgive and we won’t vote for the likes of Republicans. Senior citizens are the ones who vote.
