UNC project updates Wikipedia on state’s African American history

March 30, 2014

— Guitarist Elizabeth Cotten, politician Howard Lee and the Royal Ice Cream sit-in were among the Wikipedia topics getting new entries or updates Sunday at an event at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The North Carolina Collection’s second “Edit-a-thon,” focusing on African-American history in North Carolina, was organized with the goal adding information to the online encyclopedia.

Anyone with a laptop was eligible to participate in the edit-a-thon, in which about 10 volunteers joined staff members Sunday in room 504 of Wilson Library, said Emily Jack, digital projects and outreach librarian at the North Carolina Collection Gallery. Library resources and a list of suggested topics were available.
