Lou Giglio: Skvarla’s issues

April 2, 2014

Regarding the March 26 letter “ McCrory’s swift action”: Poor DENR Secretary John Skvarla is surely feeling the rekindled flames from the coal ash to have been motivated to pen such a letter. He accused The N&O of “ongoing efforts to attack the governor.”

Informing the taxpayers of the dubious policies and appointments made by Gov. Pat McCrory is the role of the free press. What have we learned from The N&O?

First, the governor appoints an anti-regulation, pro-business energy insider to head DENR who in turn declares that business is his customer and not the residents of N.C. Next Skvarla’s agency negotiates a paltry fine with Duke Energy over coal ash storage problems and returns more than $600,000 in federal grant money because he says the state does not need it.

After the coal ash disaster was revealed, Skvarla allowed the planned firing of 15 regulators from his department to be implemented. Seriously?
