With forward Jiri Tlusty out with an upper-body injury and Alex Semin and Drayson Bowman both ill, the Canes on Thursday recalled forward Zach Boychuk from the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) on an emergency basis.

Boychuk recently was named the AHL player of the month for March, and has 32 goals and 35 assists in 62 games for the Checkers.

Canes coach Kirk Muller said he was not sure about the availability of Semin and Bowman for Thursday's game against the Dallas Stars. Semin missed Tuesday's game in Pittsbugh because of an illness. Tlusty also missed the game.

Defenseman Ron Hainsey missed part of the morning skate but will play.

Anton Khudobin will be in net for the Canes after his 30-save performance in the 4-1 road win over the Pens.

The Canes lines Thursday had Riley Nash centering Jeff Skinner and Elias Lindholm, Jordan Staal centering Nathan Gerbe and Pat Dwyer, and Eric Staal with Andrei Loktionov and Chris Terry. Radek Dvorak and Manny Malhotra could be joined by Boychuk, although Muller could look to switch up the lines depending on who's available at game time.

“We keep saying there’s a lot of fight left in our guys,” Muller said. “You look at our games, we might not get the right result at the end of the night ... but we’re playing hard and playing smart. Our special teams are winning the special-teams game right now. Our goaltending has been strong. Five on five we haven’t given up much.

“It’s a question of scoring timely goals. It hasn’t been there in some of these games where it could have made a difference in winning.”
