Dick Monteith: Tax cuts not creating jobs

April 6, 2014

With all bragging and swagger possible, the Republican legislature and Gov. Pat McCrory cut UNC System expenditures, denied public school teachers a raise and refused to extend Medicaid to tens of thousands in order to pass a huge corporate tax cut.

McCrory, House Speaker Thom Tillis and the other legislators said that this would help create more jobs for North Carolinians. Well, the jobs numbers for February are now in and they show that North Carolina lost 11,300 jobs in February alone while 33 other states including “high tax” states like New York and California gained jobs (“ N.C. jobs data up and down,” March 29 news article).

From my perspective, I would say that the governor, Tillis and the legislature made a big mistake. New York accepted the Medicaid money and is getting ready to add universal Pre-K statewide and still gained jobs. Obviously, the North Carolina low-tax approach is not working.
