Saltwater

Oregon Inlet

Offshore bluefin is being caught regularly, while pile fish are starting to pop up. Both can be caught with cut bait. Contact: Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 252-441-6301, www.oregon-inlet.com.

Buxton/Hatteras

Lots of red drum are biting in the sound and can be caught with shrimp bait. Dolphin and blackfin are making appearances in the ocean and can be hooked with ballyhoos. Ocracoke/Portsmouth

Big red drums are being caught near the beach with artificial baits, however, the recent weather pattern has made for inconsistent fishing. Contact: Tradewinds Bait & Tackle 252-928-5491, www.fishtradewinds.com; Morris Marina 252-225-4261, www.portsmouthislandfishing.com.

Cape Lookout/Bogue Inlet

Topsail Island

Sea mullet and puffer fish are biting off the pier, while red drum and blackfin are biting off the surf. Speckled trout and red drum are located on the Sound side. Contact: East Coast Discount Tackle 910-328-1887, www.eastcoastsports.com.

Wilmington/ Wrightsville Beach

Southport/Sunset Beach

Freshwater

Falls Lake

Area fishing has been strong as crappie have been biting regularly, while the white bass has moved up the river. Both can be caught with live minnows. The bass has been moving in and can be located in about 2-4 feet of water. Spinner bait has also been popular. Water level: normal 251.5, Wednesday 253.65, full pool 264.8. Jordan Lake

Crappie fishing has picked up and they can be hooked at depths of 18-20 feet with minnows. Water level: normal 216, Wednesday 218.60, full pool 240. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101; Crosswinds Marina 919-362-5391.

Kerr Lake

Crappie and bass are being found in the shallows. Spinner and crank bait has been effective. Water level: normal 300, Wednesday 302.69, full pool 320. Contact: Bobcat’s Bait & Tackle 434-374-8381; www.kerrlake.com.

Lake Wheeler

Crappie fishing has picked up and they can be hooked at depths of 18-20 feet with minnows. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101.

Shearon Harris Lake

Crappie are biting at mid-depths, while bass are beginning to flow through the shallows. Minnows have been a strong choice of bait for the crappie, while plastics have worked well with the bass. Contact: The Tackle Box 919-557-8255; www.wmi.org.
