The band Seldom Scene will play songs from their latest CD at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro on Friday.

    • Saturday’s Downtown Hillsborough Arts and Crafts Show will showcase the works of talented locals, along with music from guitarist David Russell and others. The show takes place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (rain date Sunday) on the Visitor Center lawn, 150 E. King Street, Hillsborough. Info:

    • Paddy Keenan, master of the Irish Uilleann pipes and founding member of the fabled Bothy Band, will present an evening of stories and songs Wednesday at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro.

Following the lead of the groundbreaking Country Gentlemen, Seldom Scene carried the innovations of “progressive bluegrass” into the ’70s and beyond. Based in the Washington, D.C., area, the band toured infrequently as members kept their day jobs. Forty-plus years later, banjoist Ben Eldridge is the only remaining member of the original group, yet the Scene continues its tradition of fine songs drawn from multiple genres – soaring lead and tight harmony vocals, instrumental wizardry and entertaining stage show. Songs from their latest CD, “Long Time ... Seldom Scene,” on the Smithsonian Folkways label, can be heard Friday night at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro. Info at
