Cecelia Davis: A decisive move

April 11, 2014

Regarding the April 8 news article “ St. Aug’s president ousted”: My respect and congratulations go out to St. Augustine’s University for its decisive action regarding its former president’s less than stellar behavior. It was unlike UNC-CH, which danced around the actions of professor Julius Nyang’oro, who has since been charged with a felony.

Nyang’oro should have been fired as quickly as the St. Augustine’s president. Instead, he was first allowed to “resign” as department head while remaining on staff at UNC and eventually to “retire,” which, I assume, keeps him in good standing for his taxpayer-funded pension.

The Board of Trustees at St. Augustine’s has shown a lot more courage and integrity than the ones in Chapel Hill.
