Students from across the region were honored recently at the annual Scholastic Art Awards ceremony at Barton College in Wilson.

The program, created for middle and high school students, is designed to encourage student achievement, recognize art teachers and emphasize the importance of the visual arts in the school curriculum.

This year, 2,935 artwork entries from 169 schools were presented for judging in a variety of categories.

Molly Horan, who attends Duke School in Durham , received the Gold Key award. Bella Cude and Ingrid Trost, also of Duke School, received the Silver Key award.

The jury also selected works for additional regional awards including the Barton College Award that went to Kayley Weston, who attends Enloe High in Raleigh.

The N.C. Student Excellence Award went to Hazel Ng, who attends Green Hope High in Cary; and the Jurors’ Choice Portfolio went to Alice Wang, who attends the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics in Durham.

Art works by Wang and Eric Johnson, who attends Cleveland High in Clayton, were best of show nominees for the Eastern and Central North Carolina region.
