Having highly qualified, well-supported, motivated teachers in every classroom is critical to student achievement. Over the past several years, stagnant salaries, elimination of additional pay for advanced degrees, reduction in teacher assistants, increased responsibilities and the impending loss of tenure in N.C. have required teachers to work harder with little appreciation for their efforts. This is an unsustainable path for our teachers, our students and public education.
As part of our mission to advocate in support of our children, the Wake County PTA Council passed a position statement in support of pay raises for teachers. The council strongly supports the recommendations of the N.C. Large District Superintendent Consortium, including establishing a five-year plan to bring teacher compensation up to the national average, creating an alternative to the 25 percent bonus system and restoring salary supplements for advanced degrees.
Additionally, due to the immediate need to increase teacher compensation in Wake County to recruit and retain high-quality teachers, the council also strongly urges the WCPSS Board of Education and Wake Board of Commissioners to fully meet the superintendent’s budget request to increase teacher compensation.
Join us in supporting our teachers. They deserve it!
Secretary, Wake County PTA Council
