Wood Myers’ sacrifice fly got North Carolina even before Landon Lassiter hit a single to cap a three-run ninth inning that carried the Tar Heels to a 5-4 nonconference baseball victory Wednesday over Elon.
With the Phoenix (23-14) ahead 4-2, North Carolina (22-15) got a bunt single to start the bottom of the ninth against Elon closer Ryan Pennell. Another bunt and two errors allowed the Tar Heels to close within 4-3 with runners on second and third. That’s when Myers stepped to the plate. After two walks loaded the bases, Lassiter singled to deep center after fouling off two 3-2 pitches to hand Elon its first loss of the season when leading after eight innings. The Phoenix had been 23-0 in those situations.
Ryan Cooper was the lone Elon player with a multi-hit outing, going 2-for-4.
Duke 11, N.C. Central 2: David Perkins slugged a two-run homer during the eighth inning to help propel the Blue Devils to a nonconference victory over N.C. Central at Durham Athletic Park. Aaron Cohn had three hits and an RBI and Ryan Deitrich went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Blue Devils (21-17), who built a seven-run lead after four innings. Conrad Kovalcik went 3-for-4 and Tyson Simpson 2-4 for the Eagles (15-22-1), who scored threir runs during the sixth inning.
Wake Forest 4, Appalachian State 2: Pinch-hitter Jack Carey greeted reliever Robert Whaley with a two-run double with one out in the seventh to tie get the host Deacons (23-15) even before Evan Stevens capped the four-run inning with another two-run double to sink the Mountaineers (13-21). Six Wake Forest pitchers limited Appalachain State to four hits.
East Carolina 8, UNC Wilmington 5: Dylan Brown had a two-run double during a five-run fourth for the host Pirates (22-15), who scored eight unanswered runs to top the Seahawks (17-19). Reliever Reid Love held UNC Wilmington to one run over 7 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Brown finished with three hits.
