Rouzer: Too many lawyers in Congress

Posted by Patrick Gannon on April 17, 2014

In his latest TV ad, congressional candidate David Rouzer takes aim at lawyers, the profession of his main opponent in the May Republican primary, Woody White.

“Have you heard a good joke about a lawyer?” Rouzer asks at the start of the ad. “I bet you have.”

He then goes on to say that one out of three members of Congress is a lawyer. “No wonder they argue so much and do so little,” Rouzer says. “I’m David Rouzer. I’m not a talker. I’m a do-er. ... Our country has had enough talk. We need more do.”

White responded that he has run his Wilmington law practice as a small business for nearly 20 years to provide for his family. "I meet a payroll every two weeks," he said. "I am proud of the job I do fighting for those in need or trouble. I will fight in the same way for the citizens of the 7th District as their congressman."

The 30-second spot, titled “Do-er,” began running in the Wilmington media market on Tuesday. Rouzer, a former state senator from Johnston County, and White are competing in the GOP primary in the 7th Congressional District, which includes all or parts of 12 southeastern North Carolina counties. Fayetteville veteran Chris Andrade is also in the race.
