Allan Parnell and Ann Moss Joyner: Lack of leadership at UNC

April 19, 2014

Weaknesses in UNC’s leadership become more apparent daily. Outside pressure has been applied to silence Professor Gene Nichol’s criticism of Gov. Pat McCrory, and UNC Provost Jim Dean has capitulated to that pressure. This is disgraceful.

Dean’s only honorable option is to resign. Members of the Board of Governors are in a position to remind the governor that open and vigorous debate strengthens the university and the state. Instead, they are carrying the governor’s water to silence Nichol.

We need strong leaders promoting the central role of the university to challenge and debate. Without this, we all lose.
