Aiken launches first ad; Crisco’s latest attacks Aiken record

Dueling campaign ads were launched Tuesday in the 2nd District Congressional Democratic primary.

Clay Aiken’s first ad buy (see it below) spotlights his foundation’s work with children with autism and a childhood with “a violent father.” He says his mom worked nights at Sears and bought their clothes from a thrift store. Aiken ends by saying he’s running for Congress because “Every child deserves a chance and too many in Washington are letting them down.”

Meanwhile Aiken’s main challenger for the Democratic nomination, Keith Crisco, released his own ad on Tuesday. It criticizes Aiken’s public service record.

Aiken was appointed by then President George W. Bush to the Presidential Commission for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Crisco’s ad says Aiken skipped every meeting and calls him “No Show Clay.”

Roll Call reports that Aiken’s campaign is fundraising off the Crisco ad. It quotes an email from Aiken to supporters which says he was just coming off of “American Idol” when he was appointed to the commission and adds: “I made it clear to the committee during the first meeting I attended that I was touring and working on my album at the time and that I couldn’t be physically present for most meetings.”

According to Roll Call, Crisco’s ad buy was around $100,000 and will air in the Raleigh and Greensboro media markets. Aiken’s ad buy was $40,000 and will air on major networks and cable, Roll Call reported citing the Aiken campaign.

So far, there have been no ad spots from the third candidate in the race, Toni Morris of Fayetteville. The three are vying for the seat currently held by Rep. Renee Ellmers. Ellmers is facing former radio show host Frank Roche.
