Ann Richards, one of the most charismatic American political figures of the last 30 years.

  • Other highlights

    • On Sunday, “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” (9 p.m., Fox) puts the focus on female astronomers, including Annie Jump Cannon, who catalogued stars by class, and Cecilia Payne, who calculated the chemical composition of stars.

    • The second-season finale of “The Following,” which airs at 9 p.m. Monday on Fox, has mortal enemies Ryan and Joe working together to save the woman they both love.

    • On Tuesday, “Pioneers of Television” (8 p.m., UNC-TV) spotlights race and ethnicity, including breakthroughs Diahann Carroll (“Julia”), Bill Cosby (“I Spy”), Desi Arnaz (“I Love Lucy”) and George Takei (“Star Trek”).

On Monday at 9 p.m., HBO premieres “All About Ann: Governor Richards of the Lone Star State,” a compelling documentary about the feisty, fiery and funny force of nature who rose to power in the conservative state of Texas, despite her unapologetically liberal politics. The documentary traces her story, from growing up poor in rural Texas to becoming a national Democratic leader, through interviews with close friends, family members and admirers. Those offering thoughts include Bill Clinton, Dan Rather and Liz Smith.
