Durham police to discuss internal firearms investigation

From staff reportsApril 24, 2014

— Police Chief Jose Lopez will discuss the results of “an internal investigation involving firearms” on Friday morning, the department announced late Thursday.

The media briefing will be held at police headquarters, according to spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

City manager Tom Bonfield told Mayor Bill Bell that officers had been disciplined for not properly disposing of firearms, according to Bell.

Lopez and Bonfield previously declined to comment on the investigation, which was completed weeks ago, according to Bonfield.

Michael provided a formal statement Wednesday that indicated the department would not disclose any details about the investigation.

“The Durham Police Department conducted a self-initiated investigation into whether proper procedures were followed in the handling of property in the department’s possession,” the statement said. “State personnel privacy laws prevent the department from releasing further details related to this investigation.”
