America’s heroes appreciate your concern for their safety as your April 26 editorial, “Deadly duty,” urged the last 10,000 of them to be pulled out of Afghanistan even if their work isn’t done. Fortunately, for the rest of us, our heroes are less concerned for their safety than ours.
Admirably in his April 29 letter, Dr. Randall Williams stood with them as he explained why Americans who live in luxury of historic proportions will leave it behind to teach people in poor countries how to save lives. If we are truly war weary, more of us need to follow the example of Williams and members of our volunteer military.
By taking to the front lines of violent conflicts whatever skills we have, we take hope. That’s something our billions of dollars worth of economic aid have failed to accomplish.
