Charlotte Bobcats: A player-by-player look at the roster

April 29, 2014

A player-by-player look at the Charlotte Bobcats roster:

Bismack Biyombo

Position: Center.

Experience: 3 NBA seasons.

Contract status: The Bobcats exercised an option for the 2014-15 season worth about $4 million.

Comment: Played better defensively than the previous season, but he’s still very limited offensively and might always be so.

Chris Douglas-Roberts

Position: Shooting guard/small forward.

Experience: 4 NBA seasons.

Contract status: Unrestricted free agent

Comment: For a guy who wasn’t even in the NBA, he made a strong contribution. Solid as both a defender and a scorer. Wants to re-sign here.

Brendan Haywood

Position: Center.

Experience: 13 NBA seasons.

Contract status: Owed $2 million next season

Comment: A stress fracture in his left foot cost him the entire season. A lot of mileage on that body.

Gerald Henderson

Position: Shooting guard.

Experience: 5 NBA seasons.

Contract status: Two seasons remaining at $6 million per season. Henderson can opt out of the 2015-16 season and become an unrestricted free agent.

Comment: He did not have a particularly good playoff series. His limited shooting range makes it a challenge to play him and small forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist together.

Al Jefferson

Position: Center.

Experience: 10 NBA seasons.

Contract status: Two seasons remaining at $13.5 million each. Jefferson can opt out of the 2015-16 season to become an unrestricted free agent.

Comment: Signing him was probably the best roster move in franchise history, giving the Bobcats the low-post scorer they desperately needed to uplift a franchise that went 28-120 the previous two seasons.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

Position: Small forward.

Experience: 2 NBA seasons.

Contract status: Owed just over $5 million next season, based on rookie pay scale. The Bobcats could exercise a $6.3 million option to retain him for 2015-16.

Comment: He’s a well above-average defender and a well below-average jump shooter. This summer needs to be about breaking down that jump shot and reassembling.

Josh McRoberts

Position: Power forward.

Experience: 7 NBA seasons.

Contract status: Owed about $2.8 million next season, but can opt out of the 2014-15 season and become an unrestricted free agent.

Comment: His passing, shooting and defense made him an important “connector” on this team. He wants to be back, but probably expects a nice raise.

Gary Neal

Position: Shooting guard.

Experience: 4 NBA seasons.

Contract status: Owed $3.25 million for the 2014-15 season.

Comment: He added much-needed outside shooting in a mid-season trade. His performances in the playoff series against Miami were uneven.

Jannero Pargo

Position: Point guard.

Experience: 10 NBA seasons.

Contract status: He will be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Comment: A decent long-range shooter who knew upfront he’d be the team’s third point guard.

Luke Ridnour

Position: Point guard.

Experience: 11 NBA seasons.

Contract status: He will be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Comment: He wasn’t as impactful a backup point guard as his predecessor, Ramon Sessions. This position needs to be addressed.

Jeff Taylor

Position: Small forward.

Experience: 2 NBA seasons.

Contract status: The Bobcats hold a team option of $915,000 on Taylor for next season. Seems a no-brainer he’d be back.

Comment: He’s recovering well from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in December. Should be ready to play well before start of training camp in October.

Anthony Tolliver

Position: Combo forward.

Experience: 6 NBA seasons.

Contract status: He’ll be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Comment: Somewhat limited athletically, but his 41.6 percent shooting from 3-point range was a definite benefit.

Kemba Walker

Position: Point guard.

Experience: 3 NBA seasons.

Contract status: He is owed $3.45 million next season. Bobcats would exercise a $4.7 million option to retain him for 2015-16.

Comment: Improved this season as a defender and passer/decision-maker. He needs to be a better shooter (40 percent from the field and 33 percent from 3-point range).

DJ White

Position: Forward-center.

Experience: 6 NBA seasons.

Contract status: He will be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Comment: Was signed late in the season to mostly be a practice player/emergency big man off the bench.

Cody Zeller

Position: Forward-center.

Experience: 1 NBA season.

Contract status: Under rookie-scale contract next season at $4 million. Bobcats will hold options for 2015-16 ($4.2 million) and 2016-17 ($5.3 million).

Comment: After a slow start Zeller appeared to improve dramatically the last two months of the season. He needs to get stronger to hold his ground against older NBA big men.
