Raleigh police charge Zebulon man tried to extort $3,000

— James Matthew Wiedefeld, 30, of Zebulon was scheduled to appear before a judge Monday on a charge that he demanded $3,000 from a Raleigh man as a payment for not hurting the man's wife and family.

Friday, police charged Wiedefeld with one count of extortion and said in an arrest warrant that the incident happened Wednesday.

Wiedefeld, who lives at 570 Bob Richards Road, was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Police did not disclose how Wiedefeld and the other man came into contact.
