MORRISVILLE — A husband and wife were found dead inside a single-family home on Weaver Forest Way on Monday after police received a call about a shooting.
Morrisville police are investigating the deaths of Melissa and Jonathan Preston as homicides, said Capt. Felecia Sykes. The couple, who were in their 40s, were found inside their rented home at 2016 Weaver Forest Way in the Providence Place subdivision.
They left behind three young children, who were not at home at the time of the shooting. They are being cared for by police until family members arrive, Sykes said.
Police received the call about gunshots at 8:51 a.m. from inside the home. A guest visiting the couple made the call, Sykes said.
Police released few details Monday about the circumstances of the shooting. Investigators with the Raleigh/Wake City-County Bureau of Identification and police removed items from the scene in plastic bags and interviewed several neighbors.
The shooting was a shock to the quiet, upscale neighborhood in a town that hasnt had a homicide since 2004.
This is so scary, said Rohini Muthusubramanian. This doesnt happen here in Morrisville. I started shaking when I heard there had been a gun.
Mutiara Rusly swapped babysitting information with Melissa Preston when the Prestons first moved to the neighborhood more than a year ago.
I cant believe it, Rusly said. I thought they were a good, caring family. ... Im sad for the kids. They are left without parents.
This is a good neighborhood, Rusly continued. Well-educated and with a good income. It worries me. They didnt know their lives would end today.
Next-door neighbor Manju Nigam remembered the Prestons as a loving couple with a great family. Their children were often outside playing in the yard or operating a lemonade stand, she said.
Bubbly and happy
The Prestons often were seen shuttling their children to games and practices.
Nigam described Melissa Preston as bubbly and happy and recalled that Jonathan Preston loved steaks and barbecuing in his backyard.
Melissa Preston was co-owner of RockHill Designs, a jewelry company, and Jonathan Preston worked for Microsoft. They were getting ready to move back to Seattle for Jonathan Prestons job, Nigam said.
She said police told her that the couples three children two boys and a girl were at school when the shooting took place.
