— Partial returns in races for district court judge showed incumbent Doretta Walker with a substantial lead over two challengers, while incumbent Nancy Gordon was in a closer contest with opponent Fred Battaglia.

With 43 of 63 precincts counted, Walker had 58.62 percent of the vote, attorney Henry Pruette had 28.21 percent and attorney Mark Simeon had 13.17 percent. Gordon was leading attorney Fred Battaglia 49.53 percent to 40.7 percent, followed by magistrate Aminah M. Thompson, 9.77 percent.

Under Durham County’s “substantial plurality” system, a candidate receiving 40 percent or more of the votes is the winner in races with more than two candidates.
