Wake County school board buys land for west Cary elementary school

The Wake County school board agreed Tuesday to buy land for an elementary school in the Amberly development in western Cary.

The school board is offering $2.9 million for 18.25 acres between O’Kelly Chapel and Horton’s Creek’s roads. The site has a street address of 2374 Yates Store Road.

The acquisition comes after Fifth Third Bank lost its appeal last year for permission from Cary to develop that parcel for mostly apartments. The tract is in the heart of Amberly, a massive 5,000-home project.

The purchase is subject to the approval of the Wake County Board of Commissioners.
