Correction: This story incorrectly identified Carrboro Board of Aldermen candidate Talal Asad as a Democrat. Asad is unaffiliated.

CARRBORO - Planning Board Chairwoman Bethany Chaney was elected Tuesday to serve the rest of an unexpired term on the town’s Board of Aldermen.

The seat opened up when Mayor Lydia Lavelle was elected in November. Her term as an alderman expires in 2015.

Chaney bested Democrat Theresa Watson and unaffiliated candidate Talal Asad, who finished second and third, respectively.

The 45-year-old Chaney is a self-employed consultant with 20 years in the field of nonprofit, community economic development. She also is a member of the town’s Affordable Housing Task Force and the Orange County Affordable Housing Coalition.
