The best rock picks, May 9

Tokyo Police Club plays at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh on Monday.

  • Other highlights

    • Cousins, the local country-rock supergroup led by Loners guitarist Eddie Taylor, play Friday at Kings to show off their right-fine new mini-album – which has a fantastic anti-romantic anthem in the making, “The Lie.” Also Friday, Durham’s Sylvan Esso unveils its excellent debut album at Carrboro’s Cat’s Cradle.

    • Saturday brings Mipso to Cary’s Sertoma Amphitheater for a free show, and ’90s hit-makers Third Eye Blind to Lincoln Theatre. The great Texas roadhouse star Hayes Carll plays Sunday at Raleigh’s Southland Ballroom.

    • Mastersons open for Del Amitri’s Justin Currie Wednesday at Cat’s Cradle’s Back Room, which has Mary Gauthier on Thursday. Also Thursday, Southern Culture on the Skids kick off WUNC’s Back Porch Music Series in Durham, Chicago mash-up duo The Hood Internet plays the Cradle and you can get a Hopscotch Festival preview with England’s Eagulls at Chapel Hill’s Local 506.

Some music is measured in beats per minute, but something more like “hooks per minute” would be more appropriate for Tokyo Police Club. The Canadian quartet’s latest album “Forcefield” (Mom + Pop Music) has just nine tracks clocking in at 34 minutes, into which they cram a dizzying amount of melodic content with hooks sugary enough to satisfy the poppiest of sweet tooths. They’ll play Raleigh’s Lincoln Theatre Monday with Geographer and Said The Whale. Showtime is 8 p.m. and tickets are $17-$20. See for details.
