— Police now say that they think Jonathan Edward Preston shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself at the couple’s home on Monday morning.

Morrisville police had previously said that the deaths of Preston, 46, and his wife, Melissa Eileen Preston, 43, were a murder-suicide, but had not said who fired the gun.

The couple were found dead in their rented home at 2016 Weaver Forest Way in the Providence Place subdivision at about 8:51 a.m. Monday. A friend visiting from out of town called police after hearing gunshots coming from the master bedroom.

It was Jonathan Preston who shot Melissa Preston with a Taurus revolver, police Capt. Felecia Sykes said Friday.

“The cause was domestic-related,” Sykes said in a statement.

The unidentified friend, who was visiting the Prestons with his wife, told an emergency dispatcher the couple “were having problems” before they were found dead.

The couple’s three children, who range in age from 8 to 14, were not home at the time of the shooting.
