Kevin Sink: A true Hall of Famer

May 9, 2014

Veteran sportswriter A.J. Carr was recently inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. This honor is both well-deserved and long overdue. Having read much of his work over the years, he wrote with class and professionalism. Put simply, he was a joy to read. No wonder he was so well-respected by the sports personalities and teams he covered.

I first met Carr a few years ago when he brought one of his grandsons to T-ball practice for a team I was coaching. Carr’s first words to me were: “Is there anything at all I can do to help?”

In the past few years, I have had the pleasure of watching many little league baseball and soccer games beside Carr. His knowledge and love for sports are trumped only by his love for his family and grandchildren. The smile on his face as he watches them play is certainly worthy of the NCAA championships coveted by the teams he covered.

It might have taken the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame until its 51st class to induct him, but as a person, Carr is a unanimous, first-ballot Hall of Famer.
