A suggestion about the requirement that Gene Nichol’s public utterances contain a disclaimer: For years the distinguished physicist Robert Park, a professor at the University of Maryland, published online a weekly digest of news items he thought might interest those who follow science. His columns always ended thus: “Opinions are the author’s and are not necessarily shared by the university, but they should be.”
Nichol and others affiliated with our universities could use this, and everybody could be satisfied.
In fairness, items you publish from employees of Art Pope’s think tanks should have something similar. Perhaps: “The opinions expressed here are presumed to conform to those of Mr. Pope.”
